I wrote this allegorical Elegy as a mournful piece, a serious reflection to honor all populations who have been persecuted and to lament their deaths and loss in our futures. Since the premiere of this piece in Rome on June 28th 2019, the Russo-Ukrainian War and the Hamas attack on Israel followed by the Israeli attacks and the occupation of Palestine have revealed numerous others to be lamented.

65 keys with 3 strings per note 13 keys with 2 strings per note 10 keys with 1 string per note I desired to write a piece to be performed by Marilyn Nonken ( the head of our Piano Studies and Kathy Supové another well known modern pianist/ friend. The piece is started by Marilyn and then Kathy joins as a sort of echo. Then the two Disklaviers join as the piece speeds up eventually to the point that the players cannot keep up so the Disklaviers finish the movement.

I was commissioned to write this piece for a world Premiere in Berlin for the Anton Webern Ensemble. The name Not A Newer NB is an anagram of Anton Webern. I used many ideas which I had about Webern to compose the pieces including short durations, simultaneous multiple time signatures, etc. The name Vindauga, recommended by a friend, comes from an old Norse word meaning 'window' literally 'Wind eye'

Incheon Korea 2011 I decided to create my piece for the performance after I arrived in Incheon so that it would have some connection to the environment. After a 14 hour flight and 3 hours of checking out the performance and teaching spaces the team told me it was Joellen's birthday and we needed to go and celebrate. So after about 23 hours of being awake this was all done on Garage Band with Bass and Drums and multiple voice recordings.

Dear John is dedicated to John Gilbert and John Cage who was a major personal influence not only in my writing and performing but in the way I listen to and observe sound in the world and how it is organized either by composers or more commonly simply by nature. The juxtapositions created in nature open our ears up to the possibilities of composing.

"Because Cage invariably took the intellectual leaps his radical ideas implied, he subsequently concluded that not only were any and all sounds music, but that the time-space frame of four minutes and thirty-three seconds was needlessly arbitrary, for unintentional music is indeed with us - available to ears that wish to perceive it - in all spaces and at all times." {Richard Kostelanetz  - John Cage (ex)plain(ed)}
